Park Circle Addition
This 1930’s 2 bed /1 bath bungalow has served as home-out-of-town for up to 17 members of the Owner’s family plus guests – yes, all at the same time. The existing 1,030 sf house, in the Owner’s words, “gets crowded”. The addition will provide private sleeping quarters for the Owner and a bunk loft for grandchildren and friends.
Engaging the persistent south-south-east sea breeze, movement of sun and shade, and afternoon thunderstorms drove the design of this addition, as did the desire to maintain the modest character of the existing house. The residence sits in a community organized around shared outdoor space where communal gathering is important. The addition of porches and stoops allows the home to turn outward, engaging public space.
The completed house will have over 1,000 sf of screened porches and a central breezeway aligned with prevailing wind. Corrugated metal roofing over the porches turns rain into a veil and amplifies the sheltered experience during summer storms.
With the completion of the addition in 2021, the home will support joyful communal, family, and private living centered around gathering and enjoying the climate.
This addition was awarded a 2020 AIA Houston Design Award “On the Boards”.
